Cycling with a sidecar for the first time!
– Is cycling with a sidecar difficult?
No, that's not it.
– Oh, so it's easy?
Well, no, that's not entirely true either.
It will be easy, but you will have to get used to it.
(To be honest, I thought that with more than 25 years of experience riding a motorcycle with a sidecar, I would be able to ride away with ease. However, that was not the case. The steering behaviour is not comparable because the construction of a bicycle sidecar is very different. Now I can turn ‘eights’ without any problems).
Cycling straight ahead with a sidecar is easy. You can feel it, of course, but once you have adjusted the sidecar properly, it's child's play. Left turns are very easy because the sidecar follows your bike, as it were. Steering is then very light. When turning right, you need to steer a little more emphatically because you have to drive the bicycle around the sidecar, as it were. This requires some practice. It is best to do this in a place where you have plenty of space and are not bothered by other traffic. For example, find a large car park in your neighbourhood. Practise without a passenger or dog first, until you feel confident. The best way to practise right-hand turns is to start with a large circle and then gradually make your turning circle smaller. You will find that it becomes easier and easier.
The challenge: doing figure eights! The smaller the better! And remember: persistence pays off!
